event id 8193 vss windows 2008 0x80070005 Access Denied Volume Shadow Copy Service error

I was on routine Servers maintenance and notices that Volume Shadow Copy Service error with Event ID 8193 followed by Event ID 8224 is being generated again and again under File Service on Windows Server 2008 R2. I start goggling for this purpose but all I come across was about DHCP Server & SharePoint Server. I was facing this issue on my Hyper-V Server and wasn’t have a running DHCP / SharePoint Server on that Hyper-V Server. Error was something like as under;

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine RegOpenKeyExW(-2147483646,SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS\Diag,...). hr = 0x80070005, Access is denied.
. Operation: Initializing Writer

Solution : -

  • Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS > Right Click and choose Permission and give Network Services full rights.

  • Microsoft Website discuss it in great way but if you were / have running DHCP on Server, please proceed to this link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2298620
    There are some sounds that SharePoint Server / Services are also cause this error but above solution also works for that, some blogs says that give users full access on VSS but I think, Network Service is required only. Hope this will help you as well.
